Who are the target and the buyer?

What it means and how to read it on a deal.

Tracking Alpha

What it is

The target is the company being acquired, whose shares the spread is about. The buyer is the company or firm acquiring it.

How to read it

The Deal column shows the target's ticker and name; point at it for the buyer. The deal sheet and the deal page name both.

The buyer is named as the announcement names it: the company, or the private equity firm or group behind the new company formed to sign the agreement.
